What's the Big Deal? Wrecking a Custom Shop Gibson R9 !
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.14 дней назад
This video was in support of @RhettShull and his video about changing things on his Gibson R9. I've seen these comments first hand for years and it's just craziness. The guitar world is not a one size fits all in any way. We're just trying to learn and grow like the rest of you and if there's one thing I've learned being around most of the pros, it's that mutual respect goes a long way.

Pay thousands of dollars on a Les Paul and it still wasn't enough???? Why didn't you custom order your personal specs from Gibson!!!
@hevyglow5661 this is a 2002 and I bought it as-is. I just happen to love the aftermarket pickups
Nice playing....
Cool sideways camera idea for vertical video - shows the whole guitar neck.
Sounds great and great guitar licks!
Luv'n the tone. Great Job!
Such an underrated song. Great job. Great performances, great production, great engineering
so smooth
Emotive emotion-So WELL expressed !
I remember Rhett shopping for his R9 with Tim Pierce. He went through all the LPs until he found "The One". He explained how it sounded different, etc. Now, he is changing the pickups.
@@iaincobain3594 needs change, I've been there myself
@MichaelVanceMusic Hi Michael, I'm not knocking Rhett it's his guitar, and he can do what he wants with it, but they must have been high-end Gibson pickups to start with. In a related subject 21 years ago, I bought an Epiphone LP in tobacco burst new for £350. When I got it home, it sounded the same as my Epiphone 335 dot deluxe. I took it to my local Luthier, and he suggested EMGs if I wanted something different. After the EMGs (85 & 89, I think) bone nut and a setup I had a great sounding and playing guitar which I still own today. The only problem was that when I realised how much it had cost me with the guitar and upgrades I could have bought a Gibson Les Paul studio for the same money.
Wow, you can really play guitar!!!
Exemplary board organization! 👍
And PLAY IT! We all have case queens like the PRS guitars which have those exotic candy brilliant tops that is one scratch away from being "not mint." You are going to lose your azz anyways if you sell it so enjoy it. Relic it the natural way from play wear. If you are still obsessed with "mint" then buy a reliced and play the snot out of it.
@@JIMJAMSC i owned a $4500 Collings 360ST for almost a decade and destroyed it in a good way
I thought Mick Jagger said to "Paint It Black"
Agreed: your guitar is very personal especially if from new you alone played it except for the guitar tech....❤❤❤😊
Ok Mr. Crazy .. I’ll paint it pink.
A git friend once said, "Fenders are like Street Rod, you're supposed to chop them up. Les Pauls are like furniture that you don't even take the plastic off of." Also, Shock G (RIP) once said, "Do whatcha like!".
Im so sick of pickup manufacturers continuing this silly rhetoric that itll make a HUGE difference to your tone and sucessfully scamming people out of hundreds of dollars every time! Then once people waste their money they are so intent on justifying their purchase and proclaiming that their pickuos are amazing just because theyre insecure about their poor choice of purchase 😑
@@Tokiiplaysguitar The fact that there are numerous successful boutique pickup manufacturers suggests that pickups do indeed make a difference. Ultimately, the choice of pickups comes down to personal preference. If you love your guitar's overall feel but aren't satisfied with its pickups, swapping them out is a straightforward solution.
Aren’t pickups just glorified mics? Are singer particular to certain microphones? I know singers that will spend obscene amounts of money on microphones. What’s the difference with guitars?
I think it's just a bit of a shock to those of us not wishing to spend such a large(r) amount of money, over say a Standard, or in my case a used Standard and then altering what is said to be Gibson's interp' of an excellent Les Paul which has been built and (hopefully) set-up well. I've only gone so far as to put an amber toggle tip and a plain truss rod cover on mine, thought the old one was far too busy with all that script on the headstock. The one you intend to purchase does look excellent, it must be said.
That's the thing with a lot of nuts online and noticed this in my mates that play guitars as well, is their perfectionism goes straight into it and no guitar is ever good enough, they could have the most flawless sounding, well made guitar and it'd either be not enough and it needs upgrading or they'd go straight onto looking for another one!
I think it’s hard for the average person to see someone spend $6-7000 on a guitar and want to mod it. That’s the discrepancy. You would think if you spent that much money on guitar it would already be godlike. No one really complains when you Spend a $1000 and say you are going to swap out the hardware or better yet, relic it. That’s A LOT of money! lol😅
Make no mistake…if it’s your guitar do whatever you like
That particular R9 to me is just jaw-dropping nice !
It is a beauty, no doubt. But this one is an R8. Rhett's is the R9
@@MichaelVanceMusic oops. either way sweet top
Wish more would do this with the big 3 Strymon pedals. Love me lessons on tweaking. Thank you!
Reverb and delay in parallel is a big pedal deal. It was a serious chore to do it the old way for stage. Easy peasy in the studio.
Shame I just got mine yesterday and it doesn’t work right out of the box and I was really looking forward to using it.
@DrSmith-b1s oh no, did you reach out to Wampler, their customer service is fantastic
I'm sure Brian wampler will make it right
This is one killer package ! thanks for the demo.
Great demo ! Great EQ!
Well done! Thank you
Excellent - thanks!
She uses the Mobius now
Hi,sounds great which IR are you using :)
Great video explainer, it's appreciated, I'm looking to buy the strip and I have one question. How reliable are the pedal switches.
Flawless
Solid! Nice job mate!
Well played though for sure 🤝
Anything Gilmore is surely better than that though right ? 😆
Sounds awesome. Watched this many times over
that is pretty. pitch it up an octave and see how it sounds, Gilmour used nashville tuning for this so it's up high and more brittle 👍🏽
Sounds nice! I imagine, despite being based on a Princeton circuit it sounds deeper, bigger, and louder due to the more efficient 12” speaker & larger cabinet design.. I also find a mid control extremely useful on a blackface type circuit, Where you can get the characteristic sparkle/mid-scoop and then push the vol & mids up and suddenly your reaching into tweed territory. This obviously depends on the amp (I’m going off my Headstrong Lil King & Redplate Magica) but I imagine it’s possible to some extent with this amp
Well those D Allens are growing on me ! Do you still make those ?
I lucked out and bought one of these brand new off a Reverb surplus stock store for a little over $80.00, couldn’t believe how much I lucked out. Very unique pedal, but comes with a learning curve, just so you know. I don’t care about that, really, because I love to tinker, so if you’re good with that and run across a great price for one don’t hesitate. It’ll be a marvelous addition to your pedal collection.
Try micro vent leslie
Have u ever tried or consider the new universal audio fx enigmatic? Based on dumble ods and sounds fenomenal!
@@saveroalim4869 i was just introduced to that yesterday lol it definitely looks intriguing
Wow that thing sounds killer. It’s def the midrange, super articulate yet warm. Sometimes when you find the right single pickup guitar it’ll do everything you need it to with no distractions to fiddle with, kinda forces you to produce the different tones that you’d normally get by switching pickups, but you’re achieving them by changing attack or where you pick the string. Tasty playing too!
Wow! That clean sound is something else. Sweet
Really good sound.
Beautiful tone ! Good job ❤
! ....................................................................................~LARRY CARL-TONE~ ........................................................... (ENOUGH SAID!) ................................~!~
So the MIDI out is only for controlling MIDI compatible effects? Could I not connect this device to say, a rack mounted effects switcher with the effects plugged into that?
That’s the best chorus sound IMO. Super lush and makes full chords sound massive.
The question I always have regarding big boards: How much does it weigh?
@@williekenk 126 in the case
@@MichaelVanceMusic 😮 I figured it would be hefty, but that makes a tube amp feel like a light warm up, lol Very cool project though, and solid walk through.
@@williekenk luckily we have roadies
Glad i found a channel that thinks like i do. I am also building a fly/direct board atm (not fly but more Giant Japanese Hornet) nevertheless i also love using a real amp/cabs setup most of the time, but the pedals i want on my board are older BIGGER tube driven preamp/sims like H&K tubemans & factors, 2 notes revolt and Strymons all midi, all powered by CIOKS too. Atm the footprint is like 47inches x 19inches x 12inches (being a double decker)..lol This video has just smashed all doubts i was assuming as in largeness, weight of gear to lug around. Now i am sold on the largest goliath board, 2 guitars and bag of cables. Id rather have a bad back with good tones than have a good back with plastic sounding tones.😊😁👌👍👍
